By the end of the first-ever Spanishtown experience in Illinois, the pilgrims had begun to break down the fear barrier. They were actually speaking a new language, discovering that they could communicate in Spanish without hesitancy or embarrassment.
Much of the time – five hours each day – was spent in one-on-one conversations between a pilgrim and a guide. Pairs rotated so that individuals could interact with different speakers who spoke with different accents: Guatemalan, Mexican, Puerto Rican, and Colombian. There was also time each day for worship and for group activities, skits, cultural presentations, tournaments, and music – all in Spanish.
“It was almost miraculous,” Reed said. “I don’t think I’ve ever had such meaningful interactions with people of another language and culture. The bonding was incredible for all of us.”
The program now has the attention of the larger United Methodist denomination and will be offered in other regions of the United States. A video segment about Spanishtown is available on the umtv.org web site.
