Church Leaders: Have you asked yourself these questions?

  • How can I improve my Spanish as a clergy person or lay leader in the church?

  • Is immersion in Spanish possible for someone like me - not yet fluent in español?

  • How is Pueblo Hispano/Spanishtown different from other language programs?

At Spanishtown, 12-15 participants discover that they can communicate in Spanish without hesitancy or embarrassment, thanks to the encouragement of 12 to 15 native speakers.

Five hours each day are spent in one-on-one conversations. Pairs rotate so that individuals can interact with different speakers of different ages and different accents.  There is also time each day for worship and for group activities, skits, cultural presentations, tournaments, and music – all in Spanish.

“It is almost miraculous,” Reed said.  “I don’t think I’ve ever had such meaningful interactions with people of another language and culture.  The bonding is incredible for all of us.”

The program now has the attention of the larger United Methodist denomination and there are plans to offer Spanishtown in other regions of the United States.  A video segment about Spanishtown is available on the umtv.org web site. You may view it with either quicktime or windows media player.
