At Spanishtown, 12-15 participants discover that they can communicate in Spanish without hesitancy or embarrassment, thanks to the encouragement of 12 to 15 native speakers.
Five hours each day are spent in one-on-one conversations. Pairs rotate so that individuals can interact with different speakers of different ages and different accents. There is also time each day for worship and for group activities, skits, cultural presentations, tournaments, and music – all in Spanish.
In the words of Rev. Dr Kirk Reed, founder of the program: "it's almost miraculous. I've never seen such rapid progress or had such meaningful interactions with people of another language and culture."
Spanishtown has been offered in Illinois and in Florida in previous years. The program is now headquartered in Arizona. A video segment about Spanishtown is available on the umtv.org web site. You may view it with either quicktime or windows media player.
